HighlandersHighlanders now celebrating their 52nd year of service!

The Moslem Shrine Highlanders were chartered in the fall of 1959 as a “Scottish Pipe Band”. The band was organized by Scotty Wood and initially met and practiced at his restaurant on Livernois in Detroit. Scotty was able to bring a group together who could provide the necessary instruction to get a band on the street in a remarkably short period of time. The Tartan chosen was the Ancient MacMillan because of the similarity of the colors adopted by the Shrine.

No prior musical experience is required, nor is Celtic ancestry a necessity. They will teach you the instrument of your choice, pipes, snare drum or tenor drum providing you are willing to invest the necessary time. Our probationary period tends to be a little more extensive than some other units, nevertheless, you will enjoy the comradarie and probationary members who continue to advance in proficiency are put in the flag corp to get time in on the street prior to taking qualification tests.
