There was a major event within the Highlanders that I would truly be remised if I did not let everyone know of the safe return of Gary Marchetti from Iraq. When you see Gary at the Shrine or on parade or any other person who has served this country for that matter, stop for a second and give them a heartfelt “THANKS” because it’s their dedication and sacrifices that allow us to enjoy the lives that we lead and often take for granted. Speaking with Gary, there was one unfortunate “injury” that all pipers would understand and that was a broken chanter due to “friendly fire” from a “Todd attack”…

To assist these men and women in the armed forces that Gary came to know during his deployment, the Highlanders will be putting together a package(s) to send overseas in the first week of March to a military unit and we are looking for donations from all Shriners willing to assist us. Items that Gary recommended would be, but certainly not limited to:
• Snacks – Bubble gum (double bubble or bazooka) / suckers /tootsie pops / hard candy / granola bars / candy bars
• Health / Personal Hygiene – non-aerosol / handy or baby wipes are highly desirable / sun block / feminine hygiene products
• Entertainment – Playing cards / board games
• Magazines / Books – soft cover preferable for weight issues
• Batteries – All sizes with AA preferred for small electronics
• Zip lock bags for storage
• Prepaid phone cards
• Writing paper with pens and envelopes
• One thing to keep in mind is that food and / or health items must be new in the box and sealed.

The items may be dropped off at the Highlanders Unit room or near the Shrine Business Office to be picked up at a later date – the drop off will be clearly marked. If you don’t want to shop or you don’t have the time, you can leave a monetary donation (please include your name) at the office and we will take care of that for you with a full account to be given once the package(s) have been sent. Our military men and women need our support so please help if you can.

Stepping back a little, I have to say that we had an absolutely fantastic time at the Child Care Christmas Party back in December of 2011 and I want to thank Bob O’Brien for inviting the Highlanders to come and perform. It was truly gratifying to witness firsthand that which the Shrine is all about – the helping of kids in need. On a personal note, this was the first Christmas event that I have ever attended that had a Highland Dancer perform or where Santa Clause was piped up to his seat and both Brighid Brown and Ed Bicknell provided outstanding performances for all. In fact, I was told afterwards that during Brighid’s performance, there was a young girl in a wheel chair that had a huge smile on her face and was tapping her toes the entire time and it just doesn’t get better than that.

Now to the current and upcoming band activities. The countdown to the “High Holy Days” has begun with March 17th coming in as St. Patrick’s Day. This is the time where you will find millions of people that will don green and celebrate all this Irish with green beer, or for the true at heart a pint of Guinness, and corn beef sandwiches. For those of us in the Highlander’s, this is the kick off to the 2012 parade season and the accumulation of the many hours spent indoors during the winter months practicing and getting ready to play. It is amazing to see the number of people that will line the streets of Detroit and cheer us on so if you have not been to a St. Patrick’s Day Parade or seen the Highlanders in action, come and join us for a really great time and you will see what being a Shrine Highlander is all about. The Shrine Circus will be in Hazel Park again this year with performances running March 30th through April 1st and again on April 5th through the 8th. It should be noted that there will also be a single performance in Port Huron on April the 3rd as well. Since Moslem was the first Temple to put on a circus in 1906 and we want to keep this tradition going, it means that it is time to come out and enjoy the show and look for the Highlanders to be the center attraction.

On behalf of the Potentate-elect, Noble Michael Spensley, I would like to welcome you all to the 2012 Public Installation of the Moslem Shriners Board of Directors (DIVAN), on Sunday January 8, 2012 in the Mystic Ballroom of the Silver Gardens Shriners Center.  The doors open at 1:00 P.M. and the Public Installation will begin promplty at 2:00 P.M.

As many of you are aware, this will be the 4th Annual Public Installation and it has become a very welcome addition to the Shrine Calendar.  Of course, the installation is open to everyone, and it is a great time to bring a non-shriner friend.  A light lunch and refreshments wilblack tie finest.l be served following the event.  Dress is business casual, of course the Board of Directors and Past Potentates will be dressed in their finest black tie attire.

This year, Moslem Shriners will be honored by the presence of the Deputy Imperial Potentate of Shriners Internation, Imperial Sir Alan Madsen, who will personally install the 2012 Potentate.  Imperial Sir Alan Madsen will be elected the Imperial Potentate in July 2012, and we are delighted to have him at our installation.

Congratulations to Potentate-Elect Mike Spensley, Chief Rabban-Elect Chuck Baer, Assistant Rabban-Elect Bob Pate, High Priest & Prophet-Elect Rick Fritz, Oriental Guide-Elect Larry Leib, Treasurer Dr. Fred Jex, Recorder Jack Brown P.P., Finance Committee member Mel Morris, and the four Imperial Convention Representatives (Spensley, Baer, Pate , & Fritz). 

I am confident these elected officials of Moslem Temple will work together in the year of 2012 to represent you, the Nobility, by making decisions in the best interest for the future success of Moslem Shriners and our Philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children!
